All Specialists / Phil Summers
Orange Kids Specialist
What is your ministry background?
My dad was a youth pastor while I was growing up so I’ve been around ministry my whole life! I was an elementary school teacher (mostly 6th grade) for about 10 years while also small group leading 2nd graders on Sundays at my church which was a new church plant at the time. I eventually moved into the elementary kids ministry director role where I became more familiar and passionate about the Orange strategy.
What is your favorite part of being an Orange Specialist?
Besides all the Chick-fil-a we get to eat while on Orange Tour? I love having conversations with our church partners about how to implement the Orange strategy in their specific ministry context. Talking strategy is great, but I love listening and getting to know our church partners’ contexts to help consult with them about what this can look like realistically and practically in their church.
What are your 3 must read ministry books?
7 Practices of Effective Ministry by Andy Stanley, Reggie Joiner (whoever that is), and Lane Jones, Lead Small by Reggie Joiner and Tom Shefchunas, It’s Just a Phase – So Don’t Miss It by Reggie Joiner and Kristen Ivy (Yeah, they’re all Reggie books one way or another, but I promise I read them and loved them before joining the Orange team!)
What are your top 3 pet peeves?
I strongly dislike spiders (why though, God?) , slow drivers in the left lane (sorry, from New York), when Netflix asks, “Are you still watching?” (feels judgemental)
Do you have any skills that most people don’t know about?
Does knowing all the words to most Disney songs count? I’m not saying I do. Just checking.
If you could be anywhere other than here, right this minute, where would you be?
Flashback to when you were 10 years old. What do you want to be when you grow up?
I always wanted to be a teacher growing up. When I grew up, I became a teacher. But (plot twist) now I’m not one.
Name three words that you describe you.
Organized, empathetic, thoughtful
What do you do with friends in your spare time?
I love a good game night.
If you had $100 and the day to yourself, what would you do?
